Well, hello! Sorry for my absence. I just couldn't find time to squeeze in blogging last week. I was busy, yes. But also slightly unmotivated. Whoops. Where did we leave off?
1. I went to Detroit Lakes, MN last weekend. It was a quick, spur-of-the-moment trip. Regardless, any trip with my college girlfriends is well worth it! I always come away from those weekends refreshed and happy.
My friend, Angie, and her husband, Dave, just bought a lake house this past summer. We girls decided we should check it out. The only issue was actually getting there. You can fly into Fargo, ND and drive an hour OR you can fly into Minneapolis, MN and drive 3 1/2 hours. Of course Fargo is preferable but the flights to Fargo are at terrible, terrible times so we opted to fly to Minneapolis and drive up there to meet Angie. I met my two friends who flew in from Denver and we drove together so it wasn't that bad. However, by the time we found Angie's cabin we felt like we were in Canada!
Here were our digs for the weekend. Cute huh?
And here is what was awaiting our arrival. Perfection.
Our view for morning coffee - at least for those of us who got out of bed early enough to enjoy the view. Ahem, VICKI!
Our trip to the great mall of Detroit Lakes!
Left to right: Angie, Tiffany, Vicki, and me.
All in all, it was only two nights but we packed in a lot of fun! We enjoyed dinner, wine, long runs/walks and shopping, wine, Husker football (sans volume - thumbs down), wine and beer, and brunch.
Here was our brunch location. It was perfect - a dive with delicious food!
And that pretty much sums up our weekend. So fun.
2. People keep asking me how the girls are doing in school so I thought I'd give you an update.
- #1 is pretty much status quo from last year. The only change is she seems to have even more homework. And mostly from math. I have been having to bust out my alegbra skills and it's a little challenging! (I'm not gonna lie - when she walks in the room with her math in hand I sort of cringe and swear under my breath. I thought I was done with math homework. Turns out I was wrong. Gag.)
- #2 adjusted really well to middle school. (I knew she'd have no problems.) I think she is really embracing her age and freedom. It's exciting to watch her blossom just a little.
- #3 is loving second grade, including her teacher. She has a couple friends in her class and many more in different classes. She is really reading up a storm!
- #4 is finally loving kindergarten. It didn't happen overnight. But last Friday her big sisters had half a day of school and she didn't have school at all. She told me she wished she could go to school, too. Loved hearing that.
3. #1 had oral surgery last Friday morning. Thankfully everything turned out well. She breezed through surgery and didn't have a lot of pain the rest of the day. However, the surgeon told her not to do anything for 24 hours so she got a little bored. I cured that by dragging her to #2's soccer game Friday night!
4. Lest you think I have my shit together, let me tell you - you are mistaken. I totally thought today was a free day. I had it all planned out. Until I talked to one of #3's friend's mom. I casually asked her what their plans were for today when she told me nothing, except for the girls's soccer game. Say what? I had no idea! I'm not sure how I missed it but I'm glad I talked to her or we would have skipped it entirely! In my world, if it's not written on my calendar in Outlook, it is not happening.
5. #4 is getting into soccer more and more. She played the whole game yesterday with a smile on her face. However, I had to set some parents straight! So...just the other day we (the girls and I) were talking about soccer practice vs. games. #2 and #3 live for the games, of course. #4 lives for practice. We all thought that was odd. She told us she doesn't like the games. We asked her why and she said she doesn't like all the parents yelling. Totally understandable.
So what happened yesterday? The parents next to me - first time at the rodeo parents, mind you - were yellers. Fine. I don't care if you yell encouragement to the girls. It gets kind of old, but I can handle it. But the way they yelled at Kennedy was in a tone of voice (you know that tone of voice, don't you?) reserved ONLY for the parents. Kennedy, get in front of her! Stop the ball! Kennedy, KICK the ball! Stop her! I let them know - kindly - that yelling like that to my daughter was not appropriate. Period. End of story. The mom just stuttered and was shocked that I said anything. But honestly, that is just NOT ok. Moral of the story? Don't piss me off when it comes to my kids because I will call you out on it!
6. I painted two ceilings this weekend. I am SO over painting ceilings. Sadly, I am not done. I painted my ceiling a pretty shade of gray one shade darker than the walls. We have a tres ceiling (is that what it's called?) so it took a lot of cutting in. And two coats. After the primer.
Then today I primed and painted #1's ceiling. I would have rather done algebra than paint that last coat. Her room was just so dusty since the hubby had to sand it this morning so I could paint it today. Ugh. After I finished I wasn't even done. I had to wipe down all her walls from the ceiling to the floor because of the dust. Gross. And I still have to paint #2's room next weekend. I think I am going to do it at night. With a beer. Or two. Or three. Don't judge. Sometimes you must take matters into your own hands to get it done.
7. As for our bathroom, I am ready to get started. But first we need to find someone willing to just tile the basin of the shower. Since it involves slopes and drainage, the hubby doesn't want to tackle that part. The walls are easy compared to the floor. So, now we need to find the right person for the job!
I figure we'll start with the shower since we're bumping it out. Then we'll have to tackle the sink situation and get that all set up before we move on to the floors. I want to do it in phases so we are not without an entire bathroom at one time. That might put me over the edge!
8. Aside from painting effing ceilings, we had a nice weekend. #2 played under the lights Friday night. I may or may not have brought along wine to enjoy with the game. The little girls had a blast playing with their friends during the soccer game.
Yesterday the littles each played a game. I painted. They rested. #1 went to a movie. #2 and the hubby went to Hillsdale lake with her soccer team. They were supposed to be done at noon. They finished up at 3pm. Going three hours over quittin' time means they had a blast! #3 had a sleepover last night. Of course #4 was even more excited than #3. Or it was a tie. They had so much fun together! And you know I made them popcorn for "movie night". That is huge with my girls. They love popcorn!
Meanwhile, the hubby and I watched the Husker game. That was hard to watch - a nail biter for most of it. But man, did Abdullah look awesome or what?! I can't wait to watch him in person!
Today I went for an eight mile run. My friend, Carmen, joined me for the first four and it was so nice to have company. Plus, the weather was perfect. I came home and the girls helped me prep vegetables for the week. Aren't they cute?
And yes, I let #4 cut up the green beans. By herself. She did great!
We also made a double batch of pumpkin muffins so we could freeze half. Yum! Plus, they smelled like fall. When we were done in the kitchen I painted.
#3 had a soccer game. You know, the one I didn't know about. Again, it was perfect weather. After the game I painted and they all went to Costco. When I finished, the girls and I went on a nature walk. We were looking for acorns to decorate for fall.
We hit the jackpot towards the end of the walk and it was cuteness overload. The little girls were as excited as if we told them we were going to Disney World! I just loved it!
We came home and I made lazagna (delish) and froze half of it. After dinner can you guess what I did? I painted! You're shocked, aren't you?
And that was our weekend. Phew.
9. I almost forgot about Rosie! The littles got a new pet. A hamster. They named her Rosie. The big girls and I named her Lil' Shit.
Sure, she's cute. And here's the thing? I can't hold her. I can't pick her up. She freaks me out. (#4 would say "fweeks") And I even had a hamster or two growing up. What is wrong with me???
Anyway, you may be wondering why we call her Lil Shit? Well, she got out twice on Friday! I found her when I went down to make coffee (so I wasn't really even awake yet). Darby (the cat) was really, really interested in something under my chest of drawers in the foyer. I knew immediately what had happened. I started yelling for the hubby and the big girls to help me before our Stone Cold Killer could act! We got her but it involved the couch, the sofa table, and the half bath.
Then later that day our neighbor girl "accidentally" opened her cage. Of course she hopped right out. Thank goodness we kept her rather contained and the big girls got her in less than five minutes.
But there is something wrong with this hamster. She has no desire for human interaction. She squeals at us when we try to pick her up. Ewww. Freaks me out. I wanted to exchange her but turns out there is a No Exchange Policy. I think she's defective. But we're stuck with her. Damnit.
10. Wow! Ten. I had a lot to say tonight, huh? I hope I managed to keep your interest. I am going to sign off so I can take a shower (again! ugh), put on PJs, and lounge with a glass of wine for a bit before hitting the hay. Have a great week!
