Sorry for my delay in responding, Stair Master, but I just now found your comment!

I don't think we ever had everything un-installed at the same time. So I painted everything while it was installed and after the stairs were finished. I painted the spindles first and the handrail second. It did take quite a bit of painters tape and patience. Good luck!

Stair Master

Fantastic job on the stairs with great attention to detail. I'm about to tackle the same project and am between replacing the existing finished railing with a new railing I can stain to match the wood treads OR just painting over the existing oak railing (stained and covered in poly) a glossy black. My question is did you paint the spindles white before the hand rail and did you opt to do it while the spindles were installed in the railing? If you did, did you tape around the top and bottom of each spindle? Seems like a pain to paint while in the railing system.

Thanks for the comment! It was a long process but I still love it!

Wow! Great project and even better results!
