I am going with a theme tonight...
1. My oldest two daughters and I got the chance to spend the night at the Omaha zoo on Friday night. This was arranged by #1's brownie troop leader. It was awesome! And I have to tell you, I am not a zoo person. Generally speaking, I don't enjoy going to the zoo and will probably never suggest it. Well, this was definitely worth the effort. And many thanks go out to Denise and Veronica for arranging it:)
#1 was so excited, she had been talking about it and planning for it for over two weeks. Here are my girls anxiously awaiting the arrival of the rest of the brownie troop:
2. Where did we get to sleep? The aquarium, of course. It was just magical. Most of the girls slept in the tunnel. It was so cool because they had fish swimming all around them the whole night. (Well, from midnight to 6am, anyway).
3. Where did I sleep? I chose the darkest corner I could find! I have to have quiet and blackness to sleep. This fit the bill just fine. The jellyfish tube:
4. The first night we were able to go on a "hike". This is really just a walk around the zoo. However, it's almost 2 hours long and you learn so much! I have loads of new trivia now. Therefore, I am going to impart some of it on to you!
When we began the hike, it was light out and the peacocks were everywhere. And let me tell you, they are loud! Can peacocks fly? Yes, they can fly short distances. For instance, they will fly next door to the Omaha Royal's baseball stadium sometimes. And they love peanuts. That must explain the visits to the baseball field!
5. When we ended the walk, it was very dark. We had flashlights but had to be very careful with them. We had to point them to the ground to make sure not to spook any of the animals.
6. Time for more trivia. Do you know how many triangles make up the desert dome? I do - it's 1,760.
Also, do you know why the desert dome has the lights on the top? I'll give you a hint. They are only turned on at night. Because they are trying to simulate the moon? Nope. Because it looks cool from the interstate at night.
BONUS TIME: We're going past 6!
7. The butterfly exhibit just recently opened its doors. Honestly, I thought it was a snooze-fest. I guess I'm just not that into buggy things. Next time, I would skip it. But I thought it was a cool picture.
8. Do you know the difference between a monkey and a gorilla? Monkeys have tails and gorillas do not. More gorilla trivia...when a baby gorilla is born, the zookeepers make an imprint of it's nose. They do this because like human's thumbprints, every gorilla has a distinct nose. Cool, huh? (Note, this was shot through glass - but it's amazing how close they will come to you.)
9. Orangutans are actually spelled and pronounced without the "G" sound at the end. These guys were so funny early in the morning. This exhibit is a mom, her two kids, and the grandmother. The babies were actually given to the grandmother because the mom didn't know what to do with them. They are doing well now.
Funny story about these guys. There used to be an orangutan at the zoo named Foo Man Chu (FMC for short). Every night, the orangutans are put inside the building. Well, one morning when the zookeepers arrived, FMC was loose in the building! They were shocked but managed to get him back in his cage. They couldn't figure out what happened. Well, the next morning not only was FMC out of his cage, but so were the rest of the orangutans! The zookeepers scoured the place but didn't find anything! It wasn't until they took FMC to the dentist that they figured out the mystery. It seems he had located a piece of wire and was storing it in his upper lip. He had watched the zookeeper use his keys to open the door and FMC had figured out how to pick the lock! So that's what he was doing every night. Isn't that funny?
Below is a picture of mom or grandma begging. She was actually sticking her hand through the wire and begging.
10. The polar bear exhibit is new, too, I think. We saw this guy on Sat. morning. While I detest getting up at 6am, it really was worth it. Usually you see these guys and they are sleeping. Well, most animals were awake b/c that is when they get fed. So it was really fun to watch.
11. More trivia...what color are zebras? Black and white, right? Wrong. They are actually brown and white. Here the girls are learning about zebras and actually looking at a zebra fur.
12. Last one for tonight...this is a tiger. I learned that at the zoo, they actually "fast" animals. That simply means they don't feed some animals every single day because out in the wild they don't eat every day. This guy was waiting for breakfast, though.
Have a great week!
